At the end of October 2023, a competition entry was submitted for the art-for-architecture project in the Leonhardviertel in Braunschweig. The Richard Borek Foundation had invited proposals for the design of an entrance area. The Quartier St. Leonhard, completed in 2023, accommodates various institutions of the Protestant Church in Germany. The entrance to the main building is at the intersection of busy roads and has a representative function for the whole area that lies behind.
The Saint Leonhard Code is a design for a mural that would be a showcase for the area of that name.
Two levels of the image merge to form one entity, thus transmitting a common message. This message is an invitation. People are invited to walk into a physical space that is simultaneously a spiritual space. And they are invited to enter an information space that is simultaneously a space for their use.
The physical space becomes visible through the interior of the Church of St Leonhard. The meaning of the image comprehends the shared aspects of the Christian institutions based here and equally a historical reference to a building that creates identity. The aura of this physical space represents the space of the whole quarter, which stands for Christian life.
The information space is made visible by the QR code, which promises access to information in quantity and depth. The monumental image of the QR codes makes reference to the actual QR codes which are available for use here and which provide the necessary explanations of the institutions that are present.
The two levels of the image, which interpenetrate transparently, combine a timeless and a contemporary nature, a sacred aura with digital coding. In this way they draw together the vita activa and the vita contemplativa.
